I’ve been searching on the web for a few days finding and testing android applications that are compatible with the Pandigital eReader. I’ve found close to 30 that will work. You can download them here. However because of hardware limitations (No GPS, Camera, Phone, SMS client etc.) a few features will not work… pretty much anything that needs hardware that is not on the device will have some issues.
I have loaded the apk’s into a zip file to share them with you. All of them are Freeware with the exception of a couple of ad-ware (you will see advertisements from the developers on the screen.) To install the apk’s unzip the file ANDROID_APK.zip (20.7 MB download) on your computer then copy to your eReader via SD card or USB connection. Browse to the folder you placed them in using ES Explorer on your eReader. Click on the file you want to install then open after installed (some programs may need a reboot in order to work properly.)
I’m still hoping to get a few other programs to work such as DropBox and a few other apps. Once I find additional apps I’ll add them to the zip file.

The problem with many of those sites is trying to load the newest versions of the software as it often will not work on the Novel Reader, many times older version will work. So lot’s of trial and error to find functioning versions of the good stuff.
Any idea if there is a working panda home apk out here & were to locate it? One that doesn’t keep stopping on a person. Would really love to get it up and running on my black 7″ PDN.
Preston — after applying the Firmware Upgrade — will the Black 7″ PDN still work as an eReader as before? Only with more Android Apps?? Just want to make sure WHAT the firmware upgrade does. My biggest problem with the unit is that page turns usually do NOT work presently, therefore my desire to get the update. Any OTHER ideas to get the screen more sensitive? Thanking you in advance.
Yes it still has the Barns and Noble store and eReader, I believe the Canadian version has kobobooks.com integration. The reader after the upgrade is much nicer, on the old version the status bar at the top of the screen would be white in night mode… very annoying. It seems to turn pages okay, however I have used a couple of programs that will map the page turns to the volume key on this device… seems like a logical choice to me, not sure why Pandigital didn’t include it.
Hummmmmm — that would be more reliable, mapping page turns to the Volume Key. HOW is that done, please? (Thanks!)
I find I hardly ever have to swipe twice to turn a page. I use both the stylus or my fingertip or even fingernail by starting from the upper right of the page and giving a long swipe diagonally to the bottom left of the page. Once you practice and get the hang of it, it is so responsive and turns most every time for me. Just keep practicing…it will be worth it!
I found the page turning to be quite annoying myself. We went on a trip this last weekend, and I was trying to read and turn pages, got lots of practice with it..I found that you want to be towards the center edge and only take your finger about halfway in…and kind of flick up…for what its worth! also make sure your lock is not on on the top menu bar!
TERRIFIC experience with your firmware upgrade! *THANK YOU* for your hard work. Now — how to do I SEE all the books and their associates JPG files? I liked the “pick from the shelf” ability previously — how can I do that now with your firmware upgrade? I mostly do not use B&N’s downloaded books so that’s not an issue. So how or what app do I use to “SEE those books on the shelf”, so to speak. Again – thanks again for your hard work.
Did I understand correctly that if you download the Open Platform polaris file from Pandigital that the Barnes and Noble ereader and library functions will still work? I would want to keep that.

The open platform file does not include the B&N reader to my understanding. The firmware I have posted is the QVC version which does include the B&N reader as well as allowing you to add applications in the form of .apk files that you can manually load onto your device.
Thanks very much for putting these together, its very much appreciated. I am having difficulty in installing this through the computer. I unzipped the file first to my pc, then connected my pdn and copied the unzipped file to a folder named downloads but it is nowhere to be found on my pdn, even in ES Explorer. It can only be seen on my computer so I deleted it. Can you please tell me where to copy the unzipped folder to? Should I copy to g:/pd_novel itself and also should I install the complete folder or individual programs? Thanks again, I really do appreciate the help and the apps. By the way, I LOVE THE UPGRADE, soooooo much nicer!
you just need to copy the .apk files you want onto the root of your SD Card then they will show up under your file explorer
just wanted to let ya know that FBReader and VLC remote control both work on the BPDN 7″ running the firmware from canada =)

I downloaded this and am now using it on my 7″ Color and it has worked AMAZINGLY. I couldn’t figure out how to find the Apps let alone how to download them onto my PDN, but this was great advice.
I now feel much more comfortable with my device.

I could be they downloaded the Open Platform… which I do have in one of my post … Or it could be that they deleted the icon from the home screen, one of those things that would be hard to diagnose without touching the device or knowing the model or firmware version on the device.

I downloaded the apps package to a folder on my sd card on my PG Novel, black model . When I click on that folder, sometimes an Operations window pops up to cut,copy, bookmark, select etc. But, sometimes the individual apps do show up, however, when I click on one, a window pops up that asks to “open as”, with the options of text, audio, video and image. I’m so lost. I got lucky a couple of times and was able to install the npr news and Pandora ones. Please help!
google search {Pandora apk pandigital} i found a site that had a list of tested apk’s that did work. Pandora is there. It just dawned on me…. if Pandora doesnt update on its own you may have to to the Astro apk backup trick I posted but hey, Pandora is what it is. Small inconvenience I reckon. Hope this helps.

A few others to add to you list. Tested on Pandigital SuperNova and do work. Use Astro to create a backup apk file (on your phones sd card) then move sd card to pandigital and install

I don’t believe it has a microphone, if it loads you may be able to chat but no 2 way conversations.

I have had a Pandigital e-reader since August and have not been able to access any books on it. I have a B & N account, but can’t find anyone anywhere to help me figure out this thing. Took it to Barnes and Noble and they said call their customer support line-it may be something wrong with my account. I am so disappointed in this product. I have ordered two books have not been able to access them but have been charged for them on my credit account. Any suggestions?

If you have a pc you can connect via usb, then drag and drop the individual apk files via your desktop.

You can give mobilism.org a try you can download apk’s from there, without access to the market your choices are limited.

We hacked my Pandigital white 7 in. It works great, but some of the pages of a book are blank. I have tried powering down and re downloading the book but the pages are still blank.
